A parent council that supports projects at a primary school in Erskine has received a cash boost from a leading housebuilder.

Barsail Parent Council was awarded £1,000 to help support the school by Persimmon Homes West Scotland as part of the builder’s Community Champions scheme.

The parent council convened at the start of the new term to establish a wish list that addressed the current needs of the school. In particular they found that new resources were needed to deliver a maths programme that improves pupils’ numeracy.

Lindsay Hosie, parent and member of Barsail Parent Council, said: “It means so much to the Parent Council to be awarded these funds. Each year we establish a wish list for the school that will improve the learning experience for all pupils.

“I applied for the funding to help to us to cover the costs involved in resources needed to deliver SEAL Maths, an extremely effective and practical way of teaching numeracy to primary aged children.

“Among the materials we need are new coins, counting aids and specially devised games that bring numeracy to life and make it easier to understand.”

The parent council are organising a fundraising event that will take place early next year and have given each pupil a Smartie tube asking them to fill it with coins to help to raise money for resources for the school.

Doug Law, Managing Director at Persimmon Homes West Scotland, said: “We are very pleased to hand over this donation to such a worthy cause. The parent council offers brilliant opportunities for the children at the school.”

Persimmon Homes West Scotland is urging community groups, charities and good causes to apply to the scheme.

Doug added: “The Community Champions scheme was launched to support grassroots activities that improve the quality of life for local people in the towns and cities that we build new homes.
